Ben,
First of all.. Welcome to the list!
Second of all... XTension is software with the intention that computer
is involved in decision making rather than just turning on light at a
certain schedule. Yes, the computer stays on and XTension responds on
incoming signals from the powerline, serial/USB and wireless signals
it receives.
If you're just looking for something to turn on lights at night, I
think Radio Shack still carries alarm clock type timers to do this.
(It's how I started in X-10 originally.)
I think once you start "playing" you'll want to do much more with your
"system". It's pretty darn neat!
