Hardware Update Issues

I am getting ready to replace my older X4X Mac with a Mac Mini. The Mini has 4 USB2 ports which of course won't connect to my older USB cables.
Could anybody suggest the smartest way for me to upgrade? Are we still stuck with the old serial connectors to the W800 and LynxPLC or am I missing out on a better approach. I'm sort of an "if it works don't fix it" person so am somewhat out of touch with the latest hardware configurations and would appreciate any and all thoughts on modernization of the hardware.
It would be nice to minimize the need for keyspan adapters and adapter connectors and cables.
Thanks in advance -- Jack
