What have you got against USB/Serial adaptors? ;) I have 9 of them
plugged in here at any given moment and none have given me any
trouble ever since Keyspan updated their most recent drivers. And the
FTDI based ones were cheap (around $15 or $20 I think) and have never
caused me any pain at all. They are no more or less apt to cause
generic USB troubles than any other. As a receiver my w800 is
superior than the CM15, even one modified with an antenna input that
I've done here for testing.
The CM15 is a neat device since it also transmits and it does it all
in one box, but even modded it is no replacement for a W800 not to
mention the timing issues involved in receiving wireless and
immediately sending an X10 command in response.
My suggestion is to stick with the W800 and keep the CM15 for backup,
or to run an extra long coax to an antenna on the other side of the
building if you have trouble with the range and use it AND the W800.
That being said, the answer to your other question is that there is
no danger in having them both plugged in and active at the same time
other than it filling your log with received messages.
