Damn! I'm currently experimenting with an old Lombard Powerbook 
plugged in to my TV (standby for a wireless keyboard / mouse) and 
that seems to do EVERYTHING I need with the major exception of not 
having enough grunt to play a remote DVD .vob file back fullscreen 
with VLC :(

Does anyone know if you use a quality VGA -> video (composite or 
S-Video) converter if the "on TV" text quality is any better than 
using the laptops built-in S-video out?
