Thanks to MAE for a reminder about the (S)VGA to Mac video adaptor. 
Yes, I use TB2 to access my XTension computer, so that could be a 
usable solution.

In the mean time, I've simply (as Bob Ober suggested) hooked up a 
different monitor and repositioned the windows manually.  Actually, 
the monitor I used is the DEAD one that I just replaced -- it still 
has enough functionality to tell the Mac what its resolution is (even 
though it doesn't work) and I could get to the windows through TB2.

Thanks for your help, folks.

Hope to be switching to X4X soon now that OS X-capable boxes are 
readily available used.  :)
